How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home (No Tools Needed)
Share
One of the trickiest parts of buying a ring online is making sure it fits. The good news is that you don't need a jeweler — or any special tools — to find your ring size accurately at home. Here are two simple methods and a few tips to get it right.
Method 1: Measure a ring you already own
This is the most reliable method. Choose a ring that already fits the finger you're buying for. Place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter — the distance straight across the inner circle — in millimeters. Then match that number to the chart below.
Method 2: The string or paper method
No spare ring? Cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of string about 10 cm long. Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger, mark where the end overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler. That measurement is your finger's circumference in millimeters — match it to the chart below.
Ring size reference chart
| US size | Inside diameter | Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 15.7 mm | 49.3 mm |
| 6 | 16.5 mm | 51.9 mm |
| 7 | 17.3 mm | 54.4 mm |
| 8 | 18.2 mm | 57.0 mm |
| 9 | 19.0 mm | 59.5 mm |
Tips for an accurate measurement
- Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest.
- Make sure your hands are warm — cold fingers shrink.
- Measure three or four times and take the average.
- If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size in between.
- Wide bands fit more snugly than thin ones — if you're choosing a chunky ring, consider sizing up.
When you're between sizes
If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger one. A ring that's slightly loose is far more comfortable — and far safer — than one that's too tight to remove.
